Most thigh injuries are trauma-related in the form of muscle haemorrhage. All children with muscle bulging or increasing acute pain after trauma to the muscle should be examined to rule out musculogenic syndrome (acute compartment syndrome).
Severe trauma can lead to a fracture of the femur, which may be localised in the growth plates (epiphysiolysis) and therefore difficult to see on X-ray.
