Medical treatment

The general treatment for children with sports injuries is, as stated under General rehabilitation of children and adolescents, ‘active rest’ with increasing load within the pain threshold.

In general, medical treatment of sports injuries in children is almost never indicated. Almost all forms of medical treatment have some pain-relieving effect that will enable the athlete to continue (over)exercising, thereby increasing the risk of worsening the injury.

Only in very few cases, therefore, is medical treatment indicated, in which case the treatment should be prescribed by a doctor. Overuse injuries in children and adolescents should usually be treated with exercise correction and not medication.
