PURPOSE:
Particularly used for sprains of the anterior ankle ligament (anterior tibio-fibular ligament), where pain is caused by strong deflections (dorsal flexion) of the foot. This tape should not be tightened, but rolled on loosely. If it does become too tight (often happens), it should be loosened.
TAPING: Start on the back of the foot just in front of the ankle joint and pass the tape down around the outer edge of the foot (A), under the sole of the foot and up the back of the foot again; continue across the lower part of the outer ankle bone behind the heel under the Achilles tendon (B). Cross the tape here down under the inside of the heel and up onto the outer edge of the foot (C). From here, continue across the lower part of the inner ankle bone behind the heel under the Achilles tendon. The tape here crosses the previous tape, goes down under the outer side of the heel (D) and up on the inner edge of the foot to finish at the top of the back of the foot.
