The vast majority of heel injuries are caused by overuse injuries to the Achilles tendon or calcaneal tendon attachment on the heel bone, where early diagnosis and proper rehabilitation are important for the duration of the injury, which can be from weeks to several years. Overuse injuries are also seen in the heel pad and on tendons and ligaments around the heel.
Trauma can cause fractures or tears to the bones in the heel. Pain from the ankle (and subtalar joints) and nerve entrapment (in the tarsal tunnel) can be perceived as heel pain. The diagnosis is crucial for correct treatment and rehabilitation.
